(Reuters Health) – Adults who had multiple small meals every day tended to eat better, and weight less, than those who had fewer but larger meals, in a recent study.

People eating fewer meals tended to eat the most at night, and to drink alcohol with meals, both of which might contribute to their higher body mass index (BMI), a measure of weight relative to height, the researchers said.

“The major hypothesis that can be taken away from this study is interesting but not so mind-blowing – eating more frequently throughout the day leads to a greater intake of healthier, lower calorically-dense foods, which in turn leads to a lower overall caloric intake and BMI,” said Elena Tovar, a clinical dietitian at Montefiore Medical Center in New York who wasn’t involved in the study.

Arizona Marijuana Initiative Heads to November Ballot

– Arizona residents will soon be voting yes or no on marijuana use.

The Arizona Secretary of State officially certified The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol’s petition to legalize marijuana in Arizona, which means the measure will be placed on November’s ballot as Proposition 205.

“It’s exciting, it’s a step forward, but it’s not surprising,” J.P. Holyoak said. “We did things the right way, we did things properly.”

Those in favor of “Yes on 205” say it would allow adults 21 and older to possess limited amounts of marijuana and establish a system in which marijuana is regulated similarly to alcohol.

It’s been two years since beloved actor Robin Williams died by suicide, and one major legacy of his passing has been a continued conversation about the serious effects of psychological and neurological disorders.

While we’ll never know what factors and conditions led to Williams’ death, he suffered from Lewy body dementia, a brain condition that can cause hallucinations and mood changes, among other symptoms. But it was his experience with depression that really resonated with fans and the entertainment community who still mourn his death.

While every person with depression goes through it differently, there are a few universal truths that can lead to a better understanding of the disorder. Below are a few things everyone should know about this mental health condition:

1. Depression could be genetic.

Emerging research is finding that depression may be biologically wired. A new study found certain locations in human DNA may be associated with the disorder. Using data from 23andMe, a company that studies genes, scientists discovered there are approximately 15 genes in our chemical makeup that could be involved with depression. They’re the same genes that correspond with the development of neurons in the brain.

2. It’s a physical illness.

Depression has very real physical symptoms in addition to its emotional components. People with the mental health disorder often experience changes in appetite, headaches and disrupted sleep.

Preparations of the leaves and resin of the cannabis plant have been in use for more than 2,000 years.

First introduced into western medicine in the mid-19th century, cannabis was prescribed in the past for a diverse range of complaints including anxiety, arthritis and rheumatic disorders, migraine and painful menstruation. A cannabis derivative, nabilone, is effective in treating nausea and vomiting brought on by chemotherapy treatment in cancer patients. The benefits of cannabis in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) have been well described. It reduces muscle cramps and relaxes bladder and bowel sphincters. And it has been shown to reduce the pressure in the eyeball that leads to glaucoma.

Cannabis contains two chemical compounds of medical interest: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana/cannabis that leads to the “high” sought by recreational users of the drug; and cannabidiol, or CBD, a non-psychoactive component that has been shown to have a number of therapeutic benefits.

A new study found that people who ate more protein from plants offset unhealthy habits, such as drinking or smoking.

 

(Reuters Health) – People who eat more protein from plants and less from animals may live longer even when they have unhealthy habits like heavy drinking or smoking, a large U.S. study suggests.

The findings suggest that when it comes to protein, where it comes from may be just as important as how much people eat, said lead study author Dr. Mingyang Song, a researcher at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

“Plants are a better source than animal products,” Song said by email.

“If people do have to choose among animal products, try to avoid processed red meat and choose fish or chicken instead,” Song added.

Song and colleagues followed more than 130,000 nurses and other health professionals over several decades. Half of the participants were getting at least 14 percent of their calories from animal protein and at least 4 percent from plant protein.

At the start of the study, participants were 49 years old on average. Most were women.

By the end of the study, about 36,000 people died – about 8,850 of cardiovascular disease and roughly 13,000 of cancer.

After accounting for lifestyle factors such as smoking, drinking, obesity and physical inactivity, each 3 percent increase in calories from plant protein was associated with a 10 percent lower risk of death during the study period.

Letting happiness happen

The one emotion that we most commonly repress is joy.

We don’t intend to do this. Instead, it happens through inattention. Few if any of us would sense joy arising and make a conscious decision to destroy it or push it out of awareness. Few of us would refuse happiness if it were to appear. And still we repress joy all the time.

One of the principles of meditation is that it allows joy to flourish. The process of meditating is that you start paying attention to some immediate sensory experience, such as the breathing. Then, after a while, you realize you’ve stopped doing that, and have instead been caught up in some train of thought. And so you bring your attention back to the breathing again. You do this over and over again.

What happens is that you get happier, and the reason for this is that you’ve stopped repressing your joy. Most of the distracted thoughts we have create suffering for us, because in those distracted trains of thought we create dissatisfaction, worry, or self-doubt. All of these kinds of thinking hinder our happiness and make us suffer. Let go of them, and calmness, peace, and joy naturally arise.
